System Description

The standard High Power USB In-Seat Power System utilizes a small power supply installed under each seat group.  Astronics also provides a zone-based solution called the UltraLite system which was developed to provide the lowest cost and weight solution available for many installations.  UltraLite utilizes larger power supply units to support an entire zone in the aircraft.

High Power USB In-Seat Power System

A block diagram for the EmPower® High Power USB In-Seat Power System is shown below.  A USB Power Supply (USBPS) is typically installed at each seat group and provides up to four outputs to power the High Power USB Outlet Units.  The outlet units, available in either single or dual port styles in a variety of standard and custom colors, convert the power from the USBPS to USB power providing up to 10.5W of power at each port. These outlet units also drive the optional In-Use Light to provide system fault status as well as an indication to the flight crew that the system in that row is being used.

In some situations system power can be provided directly from the aircraft breaker panel with the discrete control lines for the USBPS units connected to a flight attendant control panel.  In larger installations where central power distribution is desired or where more control options are needed, the EmPower® Advanced Master Control Unit (AMCU) can be used.

EmPower® UltraLite - High Power USB System

A block diagram for the EmPower® UltraLite System is shown below.  In this system a DC Power Supply (DCPS) is used to provide power to a number of seats in a Zone.  These power supplies can be installed under the seat, in the sidewall or overhead above the ceiling.  An entire cabin for a typical single-aisle aircraft can be supported with only six power supplies.

The outlet units, available in either single or dual port styles and offered in a variety of standard and custom colors, convert the power from the DCPS to USB power providing up to 10.5W of power at each port. These outlet units also drive the In-Use Light to provide system fault status as well as an indication to the flight crew that the system in that row is being used.

In some situations system power can be provided directly from the aircraft breaker panel.  In larger installations where central power distribution is desired or where more control options are needed, the EmPower® Advanced Master Control Unit (AMCU) or the Master Control Unit (MCU) can be used.
