ACL and Position Lighting

The 87-03916/17 Series lights, also known as the μPTAs, are complete anti-collision and position light systems (forward & rear). Astronics set the benchmark by pioneering the LED wingtip mounted external combination lighting system with its earlier generation designs. The new μPTA system incorporates all of the same high reliable functionality but in a smaller, lighter, more efficient design.

Product Info

Each lighting assembly includes anti-collision, forward position and rear position light functions. One set of lighting assemblies replaces up to 6 individual lights. This lighting technology is a modern, long life alternative to existing incandescent and strobe systems with no filaments to break or capacitors to be replaced. These advantages will greatly reduce operational costs and improve dispatch reliability. All units comply with the color requirements stated in FAR Parts 23 and 25 for Aviation Red, White and Green and are FAA TSO certified.

Formation Lights

Formation lights are thin film Electroluminescent (EL) technology based devices. The lights are used in aircraft to help pilots navigate aircraft safely at night while flying in formation.

Product Info

Astronics is the leader in the design and manufacture of formation navigational lighting for military aircraft, helicopters, ships, and for approach and landing guidance lighting systems. Their 30 years of experience in satisfying unique customer lighting requirements with fiberglass encapsulated EL lights has resulted in Astronics being a world class supplier in the EL formation lighting market. Astronics Formation Lights are capable of operating in extremely severe environments. The EL phosphor provides for a solid state device that emits a uniform luminance over its entire surface. Since EL lamps have no filaments or bulbs they do not experience catastrophic failures and are the ideal light source to withstand the extreme shock and vibration common to the rugged environment of military aircraft. In addition to our superior EL formation lights, Astronics now has LED formation lights available for custom design.

Our highly visible area light source provides excellent distance recognition and orientation clues. Fighter and Helicopter pilots utilize formation lights to safely fly in close proximity. Helicopter pilots also use these area light sources to assist them when landing in tight locations. EL lighting is preferred as it is very uniform and non irritating to the dark adapted eye.

Dual mode formation lights can be used for normal visual operations and / or NVIS viewable operations where Night Vision Goggles (NVGs) are employed. The light unit consists of an Aviation Green portion and a near infra-red portion. The near IR red emitting section of the formation light provides, to night vision aided personnel, the same benefits of our normal visible light to the naked eye. When in the covert mode individuals not wearing night vision aids cannot easily detect these light sources, however they are readily recognized through Night Vision Goggles. These light sources thus allow for a higher level of safety when operating at night in a darkened covert mode. They are also adjustable to meet operational or mission goals. In general, the larger the lit area, the more easily it can be acquired at distance.

Ground Recognition Beacon

The 84017 series is a self-contained LED ground recognition light assembly. The design is intended to provide a solution for ground recognition lighting on a variety of aircraft. All power supply and flash circuitry is integral to the unit. Since the unit is mounted directly to the fuselage, only a small hole is required to be cut in the aircraft.

LED Landing and Taxi Lights

Astronics' bright white lamps are located on the nose landing gear strut of most planes. This light is typically turned on whenever the aircraft is in motion on the ground for greater visibility during taxi, takeoff, and landing. Bright white landing lights are usually fitted to most planes for enhanced visibility during the landing approach. They are often required for night landings but also commonly used during the day as well to make the plane more noticeable. While the usage of these lights is common, their location can vary from plane to plane. Landing lights may be located in the wing root, in the outboard wing, or somewhere along the forward fuselage. Some aircraft are equipped with multiple sets of landing lights in more than one of these locations. The 737, for example, has inboard landing lights located in the wing root as well as outboard landing lights in the outboard flap fairings.

Product Info

The 84058 Series of LED PAR36 style landing and taxi lights are an innovative/cutting edge design not currently available from any other aerospace manufacturer. The design uses LEDs so there is no glass filament to break, is shock and vibration resistant, consumes less energy and lasts far longer than the outdated Halogen lighting choices. Because of their low current consumption, wire size is reduced as well, which means easier installation, less weight and lower operating costs. Through a variety of lens options, you can customize the beam patterns and intensities to match your aerospace lighting needs.
